چکیده

For many countries in the global south World Bank is a key funder of development. A subset activities it funds have potential to cause harm biodiversity. Currently, however, little known about spatial coincidence Bank-funded projects and important areas for Using dataset funded between 1995 2014, we examine relationship potentially harmful project ranges globally threatened birds, mammals, amphibians, Key Biodiversity Areas, protected areas, biodiversity hotspots. We find that 5 by km cells containing activity are more likely contain Area, or hotspot, on average greater richness species, than those without. This was statistically significant even after considering human population country-level socio-economic effects except case Areas. also found limited evidence systematically placed within avoid species By contrast, negative most countries, which may be areas. Our findings raise questions whether Banks environmental safeguards adequately translated into avoidance highly diverse Given size Bank’s lending portfolio its role setting industry best practice our results concerning conservation efforts.

The Importance of Rotational Crops for Biodiversity Conservation in Mediterranean Areas

Nowadays we are seeing the largest biodiversity loss since the extinction of the dinosaurs. To conserve biodiversity it is essential to plan protected areas using a prioritization approach, which takes into account the current biodiversity value of the sites. Considering that in the Mediterranean Basin the agro-ecosystems are one of the most important parts of the landscape, the conservation of...

Cofinancing of World Bank Projects: Problems and Prospects

In this thesis we examine the cofinancing of World Bank projects with commercial banks in the context of the current international debt crisis. After describing the institutions involved, with particular emphasis on the World Bank, we review the history of cofinancing with commercial banks. We then describe the controversy that has existed between the World Bank and commercial banks and present...

Biodiversity, Urban Areas, and Agriculture: Locating Priority Ecoregions for Conservation

Urbanization and agriculture are two of the most important threats to biodiversity worldwide. The intensities of these land-use phenomena, however, as well as levels of biodiversity itself, differ widely among regions. Thus, there is a need to develop a quick but rigorous method of identifying where high levels of human threats and biodiversity coincide. These areas are clear priorities for bio...

Biogeographic Crossroads as Priority Areas for Biodiversity Conservation

Threats to biodiversity outpace the resources of the conservation community and necessitate careful prioritization of conservation actions. I suggest that targeting the regions where biogeographic assemblages intersect—“biogeographic crossroads”—is a strategy that may achieve significant conservation economy by focusing on areas that satisfy many conservation criteria. I used a combination of d...

Are “New” Donors Challenging World Bank Conditionality?

This paper investigates whether World Bank conditionality is affected by the presence of “new” donors by using panel data for 54 African countries over the 1980 to 2013 period. Empirical results indicate that the World Bank delivers loans with significantly fewer conditions to recipient countries which are assisted by China. Less stringent conditionality is also observed in better off borrowers...
